"LYMPH NODE ENLARGEMENT IN PATIENT WITH MEDIASTINAL HODGKIN LYMPHOMA AND PLEURAL EFFUSION"
P. RINALDI - Rimini Hospital
(pict. by dr. Faravelli)
Clinical history: a 21y.o. boy presents with pleural effusion and a 17 cm mediastinal mass which compresses and dislodges the thoracic large blood vessels.
An open biopsy is performed on the mediastinal mass and a diagnosis of nodular sclerosis, lymphocytic depletion type, Hodgkin lymphoma is made.
During the diagnostic surgical regional exploration a 1.5 cm internal mammary lymph node is noted and removed.
This is the subject of this presentation.
Microscopic description: the lymph node architecture is preserved; in the peripheral sinus (pict. 1) there are epithelioid cells with large, slightly irregular nuclei (pict. 2) - (pict. 3) - (pict. 4) which stain immunocytochemically positive with Cytokeratin (pict. 5) and Calretinin (pict. 6).
