"A TUMOR INFILTRATING THE CAROTID ARTERY"
C. GALLI - Niguarda H. - Milano
(pict. by dr. Crippa)
Clinical history: a 49y.o. woman presented with a 5 cm. mass in the right temporal, para-pharyngeal fossa, which extended towards the foramen lacerum and the sinus cavernosus, strictly adherent to the carotid artery.
The patient undergoes surgical exploration and a frozen section is performed but the diagnosis is still uncertain between a malignant and a benign lesion, therefore the mass is removed.
Microscopic description: the lesion consists of monomorphic epithelial cells with glandular-tubular features and more solid areas, where a prominent desmoplastic reaction is also evident ( pict. 1) - ( pict. 2) - ( pict. 3) - ( pict. 4) - ( pict. 5) - ( pict. 6).
The neoplastic cells show a finely granular or foamy cytoplasm ( pict. 7) - ( pict. 8) - ( pict. 9) - ( pict. 10).
There are no mitosis. The neoplastic cells are negative with immunohistochemical staining for alfa-1-anti-trypsin.
