A. ROSSI - Ospedale di Grosseto
(pict. by dr. Faravelli)
Clinical history: a 52y.o. man presents with a large inguinal mass, which at surgical operation appears to be from the spermatic cord ( (pict. 1)).
Macroscopic description: a 9 cm, soft, intra-funicular mass;, cut section it has yellow-greyish colour and mucoid appearance; there are no haemorrage or necrotic areas.
Microscopic description: histological sections of the testis show no evidence of disease. Sections from the cord mass show a myxoid stroma with a marked proliferation of blood vessels ( (pict. 2) - (pict. 3) - (pict. 4)) and numerous ganglion-like giant cell with eosinophilic cytoplasm, marked nuclear hyperchromatism, atypia and prominent nucleoli ( (pict. 5) - (pict. 6) - (pict. 7)).
These cells are positive with the immunohistochemical staining for Vimentin ( (pict. 8)) and negative for Actin ( (pict. 9)).
The same appearance with the myxoid stroma and giant cells is observed all along the spermatic cord.
