"JUXTA-CORTICAL MASS IN THE POPLITEAL FOSSA"
A. PARAFIORITI - G. Pini Hospital - Milano
(pict. by dr. Parafioriti)

Clinical history: a 42y.o.man presents with a mass in the popliteal fossa since 8-9 months, which causes progressive functional limitation in the knee movements.
Because the X-Ray and the CT scan (pict. 1 - pict. 2) are suspicious for a juxta-cortical neoplasia, a surgical biopsy is performed.
Microscopical description: H&E sections (pict. 3 - pict. 4 - pict. 5) show very mild cellularity and the compact bone has an irregular pattern.
There are coarse and thick lamellae with a strong admixture of interwoven and lamellar bone, with normal cement lines and slightly irregular Havers canals.
The dimension of the canals is best seen with the Masson-Goldner staining (pict. 6).
In between the lamellae the bone marrow shows mild/moderate fibrosis and occasional chronic inflammatory cells.
