"SOFT TISSUE MASS AT THE MANDIBLE ANGLE"
P. NUCIFORO - S. Paolo Hospital - Milano
(pict. by dr. Parafioriti)
Clinical history: a 55y.o man presents with a soft tissue lesion at the right mandibular angle.
Microscopical description: the lesion has a lobular architecture and consists of cellular nests and fibrous septa (pict. 1 - pict. 2 - pict. 3); the nests consist of epithelioid and spindled cells, with relatively regular nuclei and weakly eosinophilic cytoplasm, with a concentric and vortex type of growth (pict. 4 - pict. 5 - pict. 6).
With the silver staining the lobular architecture is more evident (pict. 7).
The mitotic index is low and necrosis is not observed. The neoplastic cells are positive with immunohistochemical staining for NKlC3 (pict. 8), Bcl-2 (pict. 9), NSE (pict. 10), Vimentin, CD57, PGP 9.5 and they are occasionally positive for CK7 and SYN; they are negative for Actins, EMA, CD99, S100 and CD34.
