"PAROTID MASS"
C. GALLI - Niguarda Hospital - Milano
(Macroscopical pictures by dr. Faravelli)
Clinical history: a 48y.o.man presents with a 3cm, palpable nodule of the left parotid.
A FNA shows mainly lymphoid cells and some clusters of epithelial cells with no evidence of atypia (pict. 1 - pict. 2).
The conclusion is of a benign lesion not further specified. The lesion is then surgically removed.
Microscopical description: benign adenomatous proliferation with lymphoid stroma with germinal centre (pict. 3 - pict. 4 - pict. 5).
The adenomatous component consists of ductal structures with prominent squamous differentiation (pict. 6 - pict. 7) and myoepithelial cells (pict. 8) at the periphery of the epithelial structures. No foci of sebaceous differentiation are noted.
