E. SCHIAFFINO – San Carlo Hospital - Milano
(pict. by dr. Crippa)
Clinical history: a 39y.o. man presents with a recently appeared and rapidly growing, pigmented lesion on the cheek.
Macroscopical description: a 1.2x1x0.4 cm skin ellipse with thickened dermis.
Microscopical description: in the dermis there is a proliferation of atypical, pleomorphic and scarcely cohesive cells, occasionally forming nests (pict. 1 - pict. 2 - pict. 3 - pict. 4 - pict. 5).
The cells infiltrate the reticular dermis but do not involve the epidermis (pict. 6 - pict. 7).
The mitotic and proliferation indexes are low. The neoplastic cells are positive with immunohistochemical staining for S100 (pict. 8 - pict. 9) and focally for HMB45.
