"PARA-VERTEBRAL LESION"
C. GALLI – Niguarda Hospital - Milano
(pict. by dr. Crippa)
Clinical history: in 1998 a 50y.o. man undergoes the excision, apparently complete, of an 8 cm para-vertebral lesion, which appears to rise from the posterior roots of the fourth and fifth metameres. A subsequent NMR is negative.
Microscopical description: sections show areas with dense, hyaline stroma and areas with spindled cells, which form fascicles admixed with myxoid stroma (pict. 1 - pict. 2 - pict. 3 - pict. 4 - pict. 5 - pict. 6 - pict. 7 - pict. 8 - pict. 9).
Focally rhabdoid cells are noted (pict. 10).
There is no necrosis; the mitotic index is low. The neoplastic cells are negative with immunohistochemical staining for Cytokeratin, Alfa-Actin, Desmin, S100, Myogenin and CD34.
