Codera is a sunny village 800 meters high up in the Codera valley, which branches off from Novate Mezzola, at the northern point of the Lake Como.
The village is only reachable on foot (about two hours walking time through a beautiful but quite steep mountain track) or by helicopter.
Nowadays the village counts only ten permanent residents, many less of the three hundred ones living up there in the 18th century.
The meeting was officially started on Saturday morning, June 19th, when a large group of sporty participants began the ascent and a small group of old, unwell and lazy people took advantage of a two minutes trip by a comfortable helicopter

A sunny but cool weather accompanied the ascent helping the walkers avoiding dehydration and offering to the "flyers" a beautiful scenery

So, at midday we all enjoyed lunch, under bushy trees, with pizza, yummy sandwiches and pleasant cold white wine

After a refreshing nap at the village inn

the meal room was set up with modern equipment (PCs, modems, digital and slide projectors) all carried up with the helicopter.

At 4.30 pm Roberto Giardini formally opened the meeting

with the welcoming messages from the Mayor of Codera and the sponsor Bio-Optica, which also offered a beautiful give-away to the participants. With a quite keen number of participants

a few cases were presented and discussed, including the one sent via e-mail by dr. Pontieri of Crotone Hospital.
Following on, dr. Giardini introduced a new topic focused on the history of the Anatomical Pathology Dept. at the Istituto Tumori and Istituto Ortopedico G. Pini of Milan, with historical material supplied by dr. Giardini and Parafioriti.
Next subject on the agenda was the presentation by Ing. Setti, from the Istituto Tumori - Milano, on telepathology link applications for the Uncommon Tumor network..
The link was established and the site visited and presented.
The meeting was then closed with the traditional "TOTOPATH", a quiz competition on general topics, created and conducted by dr. Faravelli and won by Dr.Giardini's father

For the winner a beautiful hand-made, pear-wood vase. Just the time for a quick stretching and chatting and then ready for a rich dinner with traditional local dishes such as pizzoccheri, bresaola, salame, tasty cheeses and local red wine

The after-dinner was enriched by a typical "bingo competition" with many and rich prices.
The night was then spent quietly in the few inn sleeping rooms, enjoying each other snoring and "night speeches" or squeezing into too short bunk beds.
The sunny Sunday (pictures o, p) started with a rich breakfast (picture q), followed by a walk along a beautiful mountain river or some relaxing time around the village.

After the succulent lunch

and the traditional group photo

the participants got ready for the trip down, on foot for the "heroes", by helicopter for the "lazy".
All in all, another beautiful and uncommon but professional meeting of the Milano Area Pathologists (who this time missed the traditional pizza!!).
Many thanks to the Codera community and see you again in 2001!
